Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Privacy Engineering, Information Technology, a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in a related role and with concepts such as threat modeling, data anonymization / classification, and auditing access to data.
  • Experience with code maintenance and review in one or more general purpose languages (e.g. Python, Java, Go).


Preferred qualifications:

  • IAPP certificate or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in writing well-polished documentation, defining technical privacy standards or communicating privacy concepts.
  • Experience with Google APIs and development platforms.
  • Understanding of technical privacy issues (cookie management, encryption), and experience with the software development lifecycle.
  • Familiar with detailed data schemas, categorizations and relationships.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate across disciplines (e.g. engineering, legal, policy).

About the job

In this role, you will work to create great products that provide great benefit to consumers and at the same time treat their data respectfully, with transparency, and in line with reasonable practices. You will work on a wide range of important privacy design areas, such as the Google Assistant, and machine learning privacy. You will work on protecting users on our platforms and products and in promoting privacy-enhancing design, in partnership with Developer Relations teams. You will work cross-functionally with product strategy teams (e.g., Engineering, Legal, Policy, Developer Relations) and partners (e.g., device manufacturers and third-party developers).

As a part of the Privacy Investigations team, you will simulate realistic privacy attacks to test and improve Google's products and infrastructure so user privacy is protected. You will simulate scenarios that a real adversary might use to harvest user's data, track user's location, re-identify users, and much more. After each investigation you will document and present the results to colleagues and the leadership team. You will work with affected product teams to design privacy controls that safeguard user privacy in the best way possible.

Responsibilities

  • Play a key role in understanding and improving user privacy across the entire Google business and product spectrum, as well as Alphabet products, and vendor tools or systems.
  • Define privacy improvements by partnering with product engineers, legal team, and leadership across different teams.
  • Dive into Google products using a large variety of technologies up and down the software stack by doing code audits, logs analysis, network traffic analysis, etc.
  • Define a new field of privacy engineering by building innovative tools and methods that become investigative crafts of the trade.
  • Read unfamiliar code, and quickly build a conceptual model out of random source code.
